What are the changes to the text list for VCE English in 2023? See below for a categorised look at what's out, what's in and what's new!
Novels
After Darkness has left the list, with Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived In The Castle replacing it.
Short Stories
The vey popular Like A House On Fire makes way for Tessa Hadley’s Bad Dreams and Other Stories.
Plays
Hannie Rayson’s Extinction falls off the list and is replaced by fellow Australian playwright Jane Harrison’s Rainbow’s End.
Films
Many schools will find themselves searching for a new text as we wave goodbye to Rear Window. However, don’t fret if you’re a fan of mid 20th century American films, Sunset Boulevard will begin on the text list from 2023.
Stories We Tell will be replaced by High Ground, a film by Stephen Johnson.
Other Texts
The graphic novel Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood makes its way off the list. Taking its place is Matt Ottley’s Requiem For A Beast, a multi-media text that includes music.
In Cold Blood also falls off the list, with Trevor Noah’s biography, Born A Crime, establishing itself as an option.
The English Lab is running a webinar which will introduce teachers to all of the new texts, providing a synopsis and a ‘teacher’s view’ of how the new texts may ‘work’ in the classroom. You can find more information, or register, here.
